How do topicals work?

Every person has an endocannabinoid system. This is a complex system connecting the brain to the body that is made up of two receptors called CB1 and CB2. These are found throughout the body. When cannabis is inhaled or ingested, the cannabinoids from the cannabis bind to these receptors, which can have various effects depending on which cannabinoids are being consumed. Both receptors are found in the skin's epidermal cells and sensory nerves. When a cannabis topical is applied, the cannabinoids bind to the receptors in these cells, causing localized effects such as pain relief and anti-inflammatory response.

Did you know? Using cannabis topically is among the oldest delivery methods of cannabis use by humans.

Will I fail a drug test?

Well, that depends, so first, let me explain. When using cannabis topicals, the cannabinoids bind to local receptors in the skin and are NOT entering the bloodstream. Therefore, it's been reported not to show up on testing. Topicals are mostly considered "non-psychoactive" as the cannabinoids are not entering the bloodstream. For a cannabinoid such as THC to have a psychoactive effect, it needs to enter the bloodstream and pass the blood/brain barrier. A study published by Forensic Science International found that a cannabis topical applied to the participants did not cause their blood or urine to test positive for THC.

So in plain terms, unless you have an open wound, topicals have not been reported to show up on drug screens.

However, as everyone's endocannabinoid system is particular to their bodies, there is anecdotal evidence of people experiencing psychoactivity due to low tolerance, higher potency topicals, or a combination of the two. Therefore, as with any new product, we recommend testing on a small location with a small amount of product.

If a drug screening is a concern, stick to our broad spectrum CBD or CBG products. These products are designed and made specifically to contain no THC.
